A Silent Cry (Middle/Parent)
Good mental health is not only important for the mind, but important for the body and spirit. Teenage girls face many issues that challenge their mental health and overall well being. Depression, anxiety, self mutilation, eating disorders, and suicide ideations are a few of these problems that will be focus of this workshop. Symptoms, early recognition, coping skills and treatment will be addressed. Presenter: Cassandra Simms, MD, Focus Psychiatric Services and Parkridge Valley Hospital Addressing the Stressing (High/Parent) This workshop will lead participants through planning, organizing, motivating, goal setting, and building trust. This will be the driving force behind the participants wanting to learn how to measure and manage stress. Addressing the stressing will help participants recognize stress from home, school, and work and teach skills in how to address it. Presenter: Dr. Sharon Cannon, Employee Assistance Program Manager, Partnership for Families, Children and AdultsCareers in Action (High School Only) This workshop will expose participants to various career opportunities in the science, engineering, mathematics, and technology disciplines. The panel will discuss how they chose their profession, what the profession requires of them, how they have achieved success, and salary possibilities. Presenters: Saundra Adams and a panel of professional women.Chat and Chew: Social Diversity (Middle/High) This workshop is designed to promote the understanding of diversity within today’s culture, and to assist the participants in exploring their understanding of diversity and how it sets the tone for our interactions with others. The workshop will involve an open-ended discussion of the topic, presentation of current research on the topic, and conclude with a review of practical life skills that can be used when placed in a diverse environment. Presenters: Raquetta Dotley, Graduate Student and Janella Clark, Tennessee Department of Children’s ServicesCollege Choices and Financial Resources (Parent) This workshop is for parents interested in helping their children make the best college choices. It will focus on the different types of colleges and universities, admission requirements, and cost. It will also provide parents with information needed to assist their children in determining what type of college or university setting is the best for them. Finally, it will address available financial assistance and how to apply. Presenters: Stephanie Orr, Assistant Director, Transfer Recruitment UTC; Robin Smith, Coordinator, Recruitment Services, Chattanooga State Community College; and Rebecca Smith, Director of Scholarships, Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga Diamonds In The R.U.F.F.F. - Relaxation, Understanding, Feelings, Fears and Freedom (Middle/High) This workshop will discuss the teen struggles and getting along with their parents. It will address some of the issues teen girls are faced with as they transition from children to young ladies. It will chronicle the life of the presenter, who lived with a drug addicted mother in a homeless situation for two years only to end up being placed in foster care. In foster care she lived in foster homes and group homes before being placed in a home that was a good fit, and resulted in her ability to beat the odds and pave the way for her to become the successful adult she is today. Presenters: Jame' H. Scott, Youth VillagesDirection For Life (Middle School Only) This workshop will focus on teenage dating. It will address the importance of making good choices, self respect, and establishing standards and boundaries for successful dating. Participants will also learn the importance of abstinence from sex. Presenter: Faith Sims, Educator with On PointDrop It Like It’s Hot or Not (High School Only) This workshop will focus on teen peer pressure to have sex and the potential consequences and responsibilities that might follow. Facts and myths will be covered.

This workshop will explore the hip-hop music culture and use it as a platform to discuss the law in Tennessee as it relates to sexual offenses such as rape, sexual battery, statutory rape, etc. Presenter: Jade Dodds, EsquireImportance of Test Scores (Middle School Only) This workshop will discuss the importance of the various tests that students have to take in middle and high school. The focus will be on the standardized tests such as the TCAP, Gateway, and the college admission tests such as the ACT, and SAT. The importance of good scores, test taking tips for optimal performance, and good preparation will be discussed. Emphasis will also be placed on recent state legislation regarding the effect of test scores on class grades. Presenter: Felicia Montgomery, Educator, Hamilton County SchoolsIt’s A Family Affair (Parent) Too many of our children are obese and have poor eating habits. This workshop will focus on the importance of healthy eating and healthy meal planning for families. Living With Purpose (Middle/High School Only)
“Around the World, women are making a contribution and around the world women have critical problems” (Living with a Purpose, Dorothy Height, 2010, p 81). Public service is becoming an important part of our daily lives. Helping others requires a heart and a desire to serve. Organizations and institutions of higher learning are becoming aware of this and are starting to require it for employment and admission. This workshop will focus on the importance of public service and what it means to reach out and help others, or to give back in honor of those who helped us. It will also inspire participants of the importance and the need for public service and provide suggestions as to how to get involved. Presenters: Angelnetta M. The media portrays these images as the essence of beauty. But what happens if you don’t look like Tyra Banks, Rihanna, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Myley Cyrus or others? How can participants cope with puberty and skin disorders, which present a negative impact? This workshop is designed to assist high school girls who are searching for self-identification. It will assist participants in identifying the benefits of self-empowerment, which is essential for success in a global community. This workshop will assist participants in learning strategies for saving money, managing a checking account, learning responsible ways to use debit and credit cards. In addition, parents will learn strategies for saving for college and investing. Presenters: SunTrust BankSexuality 101: What You Don’t Know About STD (Middle/High) Many young girls in Hamilton County are contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and are not aware of what is happening to their bodies. Due to fear, many are not telling until they become ill. This workshop is designed to carefully explain how these diseases are contracted, how the body reacts to them, how they are treated, and how to avoid them. Facts about the more common STDs will be presented. Presenter: Sandra Nelson - Chattanooga Hamilton County Health DepartmentThe Social Network (Middle/High/Parent) - Session I In today’s society where so much communication is driven by technology, it is important that our teens know how to use social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter and others) responsibly. This workshop will address various social media sites used by teens today. It will discuss what the sites are, the purposes of them, positive and negative uses, and potential good and bad consequences. Presenter: Jade Dodds, EsquireWhat’s Love Got To Do With It? Everything (Middle/High) Using Tina Turner’s recording as an attention-getter, this workshop will focus on how embracing the love of God enhances love of self and others. “What love is” and “What love is not” will be analyzed. Presenter: Christine Hicks, Retired Educator and Principal What Will I be When I Grow Up (Middle School) This is an interactive workshop that will focus on three questions important to thinking about future career choices: (1) Career of job: What is the difference? (2) What are my career options? (3) How can I achieve my career goal? The workshop will include a discussion and handouts related to each question. At the end of the workshop, each participant should have new self-knowledge and objectives for school achievement and direction toward future career goals. Presenter: Dr. Barbara Medley, UTCYour Body Is Your Temple (Middle/High) This workshop is designed to educate the participants on living a healthy lifestyle including eating and exercise. With the increase of obesity in children and teens, it has become critical that we change our lifestyles. The presentation will increase the awareness and knowledge of the participants on this subject and alternative to junk food eating. Body Mass Index (BMI) will also be discussed.
